Getting ready to order a new pickguard for my EG, but I want to wait until I have it to decide where to place the hole for the volume pot. Is there a special tool I can use to cut it myself, or can it just be drilled out with a bit? If so, what size would I use?

You can just drill it. It's best to use a small bit (eg 1/16" or 3/32") first to center the large one.
Most Far-East pots need an 8mm hole, US-made ones 3/8".
I just bought two CTS pots from Guitar Heaven, so I would assume they're US, right?
If you've got one, a taper reamer is better - more controllable, and tends not to chew up the plastic as much - but the hole will be completely covered by the nut, washer and knob anyway so neatness is not critical. Not worth buying a reamer (they're expensive) if that's the only thing you're going to use it for.
How much is "expensive"?
EDIT: Just looked them up online, would this work (http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/kyo/kyo80311.htm)? Not too bad cost-wise, and I could see other uses for it. Yes? No? Maybe?

You don't need to worry too much. Plastic is soft and easy to drill. Drilling a small hole first is a good idea. You really don't need to spend the dough on the reamer for this job.
