Ive got an old Peavey Stereo Chorus 2X12 combo solid state amp that has crapped out on me. I have no desire to ressurect or spend money on repairing the power amp, and am wondering if I should/could keep the speakers and re-use them in a better way.

The speakers are about 17 years old and are likely black widows (or scorpions?). They always sounded good and are in good shape. Would it be worth making a 2X12 cabinet and putting in old speakers to a new cab, or do the cones or tone of the speakers degrade over time. What do you guys do with old speakers.

It may be a fairly simple problem that causing you all the headaches. Peavey has some issues with Molex connectors on their circuit boards coming loose on certain models. If I were you I'd check inside to make sure all the connectors are tight. The Stereo Chorus 212's are actually pretty rugged amps and have a good reputation for not crapping out all the time.

As far as the speakers go....they are of decent quality...though not my first choice... and would probably do fine in a home-brewed cabinet.

I had 4 old 12" Peavey Scorps that I put into 2 "home grown" cabs and they sounded fine... a bit on the bright side but that's just the way Scorps sound to my ears. I ended up selling them for $25 each.
