OK, I'm nearly at wit's end, and I figured I should ask here to see if anyone can help me out. I was lucky enough to have PRS custom-make me a replacement 5-way rotary switch for my 1990 Custom (which is different than every other 5-way switch PRS has ever built). However, I am now frustrated since my tech couldn't figure out exactly how to wire the switch in and get the sounds you're supposed to get. PRS provided me with wiring diagrams, but according to my tech they were rather vague (ie: one position is labeled "Strat", but doesn't tell you what the pickup configuration should be). Can anyone direct me to a PRS Specialist who would be able to wire this switch the proper way? This is the only part of my 1990 PRS that's not original (other than the nut being replaced with a new PRS nut), and I want the guitar to match original specs. The original 5-way had been replaced with a 3-way toggle and the old 5-way switch was unusable (it was stripped out). I sent the original 5-way rotary for PRS to duplicate, and now I want it installed with the proper switching options intact. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What are the pickup selections you want, out of this switch? Over the years, PRS has changed the pickup selections, a few times, and I don't know what is considered stock for a 1990.

What are the sounds you are getting?

PRS sent Tom a diagram that had one setting I didn't expect. I thought that a PRS guitar that old would have had the power out of phase selection -- both full humbuckers, in series with each other, with one out of phase. Gibson forced PRS to stop using this selection, but I don't know when that happened. This diagram featured the full bridge humbucker in series with the inside coil of the neck pickup, with that inside coil out of phase. I have no idea what that would sound like, but it won't be hum cancelling (odd number of coils).

Anyway, the five sounds on that guitar will be:

10 - full bridge humbucker
9 - full bridge humbucker, in series with the inside coil of the neck pickup, with the neck pickup coil out of phase
8 - inside coils in series, in phase
7 - inside coils in parallel, in phase, with a .001uF capacitor bleeding some highs to ground
6 - full neck humbucker

Does this sound like yours?

PRS had originally supplied me with the wiring diagram that covers the 5-way switching for 1989-1990 PRSi, but my tech was having trouble making sense out of it, which is where Jim came in and provided superb detail on how to wire the switch properly. I can forward the emails and schematics to you if you would like. ROCK ON!!!

This is a crude representation of PRSman's switch.

The different colors for the jumpers are not significant. They are only there if a line crosses another line.

The little capacitor between M5 and B5 is a .001mF cap.
