Hey all,
I'm looking for a first wah pedal. What do you recommend? I'd like to stay within the 100-120 range, but less is great! Thanks in advance. Please respond quick-like!

In that price range the reissue Vox wah-wah is a great buy. It even includes a neat carrying bag with it....just like when they were new back in the 60's.

For that price (or less) I like the Dunlop wahs. I have a Cry Baby, but you can also get the 535Q, which allows you to tailor the tone and range of the wah.

I like Dunlop as well. Might be worth checking out their new Fasel inductor crybaby. I have a 535Q and it is nice.

I've been lucky enough to find myself a Coloursound wah wah, really wide sweep and I love it's sound :D

i use the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix wah... it's got a 'fatter' wah sound compared to the regular cry baby. (see voodoo child in the 'members soundclips' for the pedal in action) :)

a quick google search suggests you can pick one up for $89. So you'll have change from your 100 bucks :dude:

I would go with the Vox, they have a great tone. I have the 535Q myself. While it's a very good wah with a lot of variables you can adjust, it's more than I use and seems a tough over designed for me.

I'm surprised more people don't recommend the Morley Bad Horsie wah. I have one and love the fact that there's no button to step on and no "click" to hear through your amp. You step on it and it's on; you take your foot off and it's off. Of course, if you like to leave your wah on in a set position, this is not the wah for you. But, I liked the range on the sweep. Maybe I'm missing something, but this wah works for me!

Also, Morley has some newer versions and other wahs, too.

I used to have a standard Morley wah, but I just couldn't get away with the sound of it.
Now I use a Danelectro Dan O Wah which gives you six different wah's, overdrive and an octave pedal all in one package.
I also have two Jim Dunlop crybaby's from the seventies, they don't work but I hope to get them sorted soon.
Also on the way is a Coloursound Wah Wah, don't know if you guys have come across them ? they have a really wide sweep and the pedal is lovely, nice and wide. It's what Robbo used in Thin Lizzy on Live and Dangerous etc, check out The Rocker :dude: :D

Hi, I can't understand peoples posts about the coloursound Wah Wah.
I've got one from 1976, its got the date inside it.
My Dad bought it in about 1980 and its rubbish.
I have only used it once or twice in about 20 years, its built nicely, I have bent the slot in the back to pieces, trying to get the back off with various things to put a battery in it.
I have used it more just as a foot rest though.
Its a terrible Wah pedal with hardly any range at all, infact when I am using distortion, I can't hear any difference.
With most Wahs, I believe that when the pedal is ON but flat, they are a lot more trebly than when off, but the Coloursound goes from the heel back muddy sound to the foot flat "normal" sound so when you click it off there is no difference.
I am now using the Wah on my POD XT-LIVE which is amazing!
Stefan.

Crybaby Classic is cool - true bypass and fasel inductor
Vox Clyde Reissue - also true bypass and their version of fasel inductor.

me, I still have my cracked up old dunlop hendrix special wah. not true bypass, but didn't suck tone like the standard crybaby's that were around when I got it.

If not on a budget, I'd ck out Teese and Fulltone too.

I like my 535q for its boost switch. Perfect for solos. However for a first wah, i would go with the vox because theres no knobs if tweaking a wah can scare you.

I have the bad horsie II and i love it. You can taylor the tone with the frequency type knob. And i dunno if this was only the case on the bad horsie I but i can leave the wah in one spot and it stays on. Its got a large amount of white noise when you use it with distortion.. so ill eventuly ( when i get everything else i want haha ) look for a different wah.

Another fan of the Bad Horsie. I Just cant get over the ease of use, and Ive A/B/C/D'd em ( I also have a VOX, an old Crybaby and my Line 6 Floorboard Wah) and I really cant tell the difference in tone. The sweep is a little different, but for me, the nod goes to the Bad Horsie because its impossible to leave on!

I agree with John, the Coloursounds wahs are really good. I only sold mine because a guy in a Thin Lizzy tribute had his stolen (off stage  ) and was desperate for one.
I had a Morley wah, just a basic one and it was shite, not much wakka wakka going on .
I guess Crybaby's and Vox seem to be the better ones out there !! IMO ;)

I use the Bad Horsie II as well. The biggest selling point for me was the switchless operation. Walk up to it, use the damn thing, walk away. I also really like how I can tailor the sweep and boost for solos.

I think the reason some people don't like them or find them noisy is because they're using them in front of their amps, when those pedals really prefer to live in the loop.

I always tought wahs and overdrive were the two things you NEVER put in the loop ?

Buy a Crybaby GCB-95 [$60], add "true-bypass" Keeley mod [$70]. You get classic great wah sounds w/o notorious tone sucking when "off" [ = $130.00].

Yes, PLEASE don't bring up the 'true bypass' thing when John is here! :D

Seriously? I agree with him, I think the newer ones seem to come with a buffer, making the whole non-true-bypass thing irrelevant.

But if you wanted to go true bypass, I bought a kit for mine and wired it up myself for way less than $70.00

Sorry, I should have elaborated...the $70 mod is not solely a "true bypass" conversion as you can see from the description below. He adds both output and and bass/mid voicing trim pots. Other mods can include Fasel inductor conversions, LED's etc.

For all of you familiar w/ Robert Keeley's products (Keeley Compressor. Blues Driver mod, etc), his work is exceptional and his "mods" significantly improve tone when compared to the original product.

He modded my Crybaby. It has no effect on signal chain tone when "off" and sounds great when engaged. I've A/B'd it to, and prefer it over the stock Vox, Dunlop, Fulltone and (yes, even) Teese wahs.

At the very least....those w/ dissatisfied w/ their stock Crybabys, have a viable upgrade option.
