View Full Version : Replacement Split-coil Recommendations for a PRS

Can anyone recommend replacement split-coil pickups for a PRS that will do a more convincing Strat/Tele impression? I love the feel and playability of a PRS (as well as the smooth trem action), but really love Fendery-type tones. I'd really like to get close to these tones with a PRS.

I'm a little underwhelmed to say the least by the split coil tones from the Custom 24s I've tried. Are the CU22s any better at copping these honky/hollow sounds, or are they really more in the Les Paul realm? Would a CE be a better choice for flat-out versatility?

I'm not interested in the SAS or Soapbar models at this point, so any recommendations to make a Custom/CE more versatile at the split-coil positions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thats a tough call with PRS pups - #6s might get you closer, some of the SC Trem guys know better than I have. PRS pups seem to be closer to LPs than strats.

I'm thinking maybe an SD JB or Pearly Gates might be a good choice...but there are SD experts here so I'm not going to speak on their behalf.

I can easily coax twang out of my CU22's Dragon IIs... But it's still not a Tele. Twang yes, Tele twang, no.

Which is why I bought a Tele. :D

I'm with Aldwyn there. Course I have had pretty good luck with the Artist Pup's on the 5 way in my Std 24. But when I want strat or tele ( rare anymore) I have a home made of each ( partscasters.) I do like the split tones of the CU 22 I use them quite a bit for rhythm things in the band.

You already have the CU24 I take it? I'd suggest a pair of Rio Grande Tall boy neck and Muy Grande bridge humbuckers. When split it's a TRUE single coils, just as if you purchased the like model of strat pup. Now if you are using McCarty switching you wont get the out of phase honk, but with these pups you will get a true single coil sound, and a very nice humbucking tone.

I have a Dean EVO Premium with SD Pearly Gates Plus pickups. The single coil sound is Fenderish, leaning more to a Tele sound. I am happier with this sound than I have been with P90's (more flexible) or my SAS.

I do however play with another guitarist who plays a Fender Strat or B-bender Tele, and I always try to sound different from the other guitar.

I too think that Aldwin nailed it. My CU22 gets me close enough to twang to keep a straight face playing Roy Buchanan licks, but it is not a Tele, and does not do the Strat in-between quack sounds either.

Which of course is why I'm an avid Fender owner as well ;)

Thanks for the replies so far. I realize that the true solution is to supplement the PRS with a Strat and Tele, but I'm going for maximum versatility in one instrument. It's just the way things have to be at this point. Maybe down the line I'll get a Strat, but right now I'd like as close as I can come to these tones in a PRS package.

I have heard the Rio Tallboys mentioned before somewhere, and would be enthusiastic about trying them out. Anyone else using them? Do they really have a decent vintage single coil tone?

Thanks.
