View Full Version : High end acoustics vs. high end electrics

While BaM was down I was visiting some other forums.
It seemed like a good chunk Taylor and Martin forum members had a ton of money inevested in multiple high end acoustic guitars but when it came to electrics they had a regular old fender strat (somthing along those lines, nothing special)
I thought that was funny because folks post their gear pics here it always seems to be multiple PRS guitars and some seriously expensive amps to keep them company but the acoustics always seem to be missing. Anyone else notice this?
I just thought it was funny because I'm in the midst of searching for my 1st quality acoustic to keep my Mccarty, Es335 and Strat company.

If anyone has a stable/harem pix of both high end electric and acoustic it would be very cool to see your photos....

Thanks,

DW

here's a rather terrible picture of my Taylor 810...

http://community.webshots.com/photo/61490575/61495810XkLVeW

it's a 1989, and quite frankly the best acoustic i've ever played (and i've heard that comment from a few other people as well!)

Here are my Taylors: K65 and 910. And yes, these guitars get gigged on a regular basis.

The color does not show up in the photo but it's paua and pearl.

I've got a Taylor 612CE that I absolutely am in love with. It is a wonderful fingerstyle acoustic. I'm presently having an acoustic guitar built by a local luthier named James Fry. It will be a jumbo and will be my strummer's cannon! I played this guy's guitars and flipped and had to have one. I promise to post pics when it's done. I feel like a kid at Christmas. :D

No pics but my acoustic is a Larivee J10E Jumbo. A Martin and Tatylor killer in my opinion. It does stand alone in the acoustic department at my place but considering I don't play much acoustic it is certainly adequate to the task.

I have two Tacoma acoustics here now; a third on the way and one more past them "out there" coming at an unspecified date. I also have a Taylor Baby and a Taylor Big Baby.

I don't have my gear pics updated, but I will. I find the higher end Tacomas are a very excellent value on the used market much like Hamer USA guitars are. And I am a sucker for a killer guitar at a low price, believe me. :D

The higher end Tacoma's are exceptionally fine guitars that sort of get overlooked because the bulk of Tacoma's biz is on the lower end of the scale.

That's fine with me.

I think folks get sort of caught up in what they need/want/like and go a bit nuts overdoing it on one flavor of guitar (I am no exception - trust me); but in my case, my needs have changed and guitars are much more varied here than they have ever been.

I have a '76 Martin D-35 that's an absolute cannon!

Also in the stable are 3 Taylors:

LOTF 814 C (no E) (BRW/Engleman)
714-CE LTD (Cocobolo/Cedar)
Baby Taylor

Anybody have any Taylors with the new expression system? I've heard mixed reviews on it.

Hey, I've got some Martins...

L to R on the floor:

1932 OM-28
1927 OO-42
1937 OOO-18

Hanging behind it is a 1953 OOO-21.

Old acoustics, new electrics is my cup of tea.

Well I don't have pictures but I have an ovation collector series 1992 (maybe not as high end but plays very good), a Taylor 914CE L1 and Taylor Gallery Series Sea Turtle.

I've been gassing recently for a nice acoustic, and this thread isn't helping any (particularly elgreco's K65!)...Beautiful guitars all-around.

You & me both, John.

I just realized I have 4 acoustics, but nothing really nice nor inspiring.

I ain't got no high end acoustics. Only a couple of mid level Yamahas... but my Yamaha APX-9c is one of the best acoustic/electrics I have ever played. Stright into the board this thing is KILLER tone wise. Killer!

Peace,
Aldwyn

Here is my new Taylor coco LTD dread. I have 8 taylors and 2 ovations. I've been playing more and more acoustic and less electric these pass few months and I love it.

I have 2 ES equipped guitars, one was no problem, one I had to send back to taylor to replace the whole ES system. The ones built prior to june 2003 had alot of problems. The recent ones less so, but some people still have problems. The taylor forum has a whole discussion page on the ES. It is awesome though, the ES DVD is also great, you can sign up for a free one on the taylor webpage.

Yeah, well, I have an FG 312 (6 strings lately) that I bought used back in the 80s for $95. Does that count? ;)

Acoustics are much more utilitarian for me than electrics. I've got one nice acoustic, a Larivee C-09 I bought new in the early 90's. It's just all I've ever needed and I've used it a lot both at home and gigging. I've been through 5-6 other acoustics over the years due to the simple fact that I'm a guitar slut, but they just don't appeal to my wheeler dealer mentality. Electrics are so much more fascinating...there's red ones and blue ones and humbuckers and coil splitters and tiger striped ones and quilt ones and crackwowod ones and on and on and on. And then there's amps! Oh my, don't get me started...

I was thinking about that too, tmoore...that electrics are so interesting to look at compared to acoustics. My acoustics are all old and generally beat to hell but they don't begin to sound right until they're 50 years old (kind of like me, now that I think about it :D). But an acoustic guitar is organic and will learn to adapt to you. My OM-28 is like my dog...it wags its tail when it sees me and will do anything to please.

I kind of feel like Tmoore in that the acoustics are utilitarian and that I find more pleasure in the diversity of my electrics. But when you bond with an acoustic there's nothing quite like it - the way it opens up and adapts to you.

When I recently trimmed down the collection, I trimmed down to one acoustic, my Gibson J-45 Rosewood model, which I recommend very highly. I've been through Martins and Guilds (both great guitars) over the past few years, but I tended to lean most heavily to the Gibsons - I had two other ones at one point. I like the beefy sound and the fat necks.

Recently acquired an Ovation Collectors 2003. The tone is very well rounded and the notes are all very clear, besides very playable up to the highest frets. Much difference against my Yamaha APX-6. Allthough, I tried a Taylor Custom last year at the MusikMesse and that axe sounded really fantastic. Only, Taylors are so expensive here in Europe ...
