View Full Version : Interesting D Harmonic on my Tele

I learned this from Tom Morello while watching him play "Out of Exile" live.

On my Telecaster's open G string, if you strike the string IN BETWEEN the nut and the tuner, it produces a perfect D note... very high pitch harmonic. Of course it helps to have more "gain" in your amp.

It has to do with the distance between the nut and the tuner. BTW, you have to have no string tree for it to work.... which means, you'll probably need staggered tuners too.

Try it with your PRS... it produces a different note that is really unusable.

Of course I would take a PRS over a tele any day... but it's just interesting about the tele... just thought I'd share... another cool little thing that you can put in your live bag-o-tricks.

Hail Mr Tom Morello.

jyeah!

One other cool trick with a Fender is instead of picking the G string where you're talking about, you push it down as if you were to fret it. You get a perfect G# note. Unfortunately you don't get anything much with a PRS, if anything it's a slightly out of tune G. :)

Yup! I seen someone do that at a local bar... except he did it a lot on the B string. He was a pretty good blues player.... run circles around me... that's fo sho.

the johnny hiland video, he talks about fretting behind the nut. he said they recessed the truss rod cover to give you a perfect 1/2 step or something like that.

That is a cool trick! Another reason to be happy with my Telecaster purchase!

Thanks for the tip. Just tried it on my Strat (with string tree), and it put out a C#.

I love this 'thinking outside the box' philosphy!

on 25.5" scale guitars w/fender style headstocks (6 to the top side) tuned E_A_D_G_B_E, above the nut, from the top down:
original pitch=left / above the nut pitch=right
E=F
B=D#
G=D
D=C#
A=D
E=unmanageable, imo

note that the exact pitches will vary w/differences in string tensions (and string wear/age);
the pitches (as marked above) are generally correct for a gtr strung .010-.046, tuned to "standard" tuning.
(naturally, this is also a quantifiable element w/gtrs of other scale-lengths, tunings, string gauges etc).
also, note that:
if you have a whammy bar, the pitches can be manipulated (ie, "played") w/some little mastery of the bar.

ps:
it's a guitar; this is music:
there IS no box, but for the ones we either design or accept.
