Cheese and tomato sandwiches and a load of other nibbly bits.

Come on chaps / chapesses ..we can't let the munch thread go to the wall.

Ash or Alder for your strat (or other guitar)

Ash is pretty, Alder is more consistent I feel. I'll go for alder.

Steak and Kidney pie, with peas and gravy.

Personally, I don't care what the body wood is. I haven't got a clue what my lot are made of and, anyway, I don't think it makes much difference to the sound. Now for pretty stuff, you will need to speak to the pretty guitar lovers here. ;)

For necks, I prefer maple, mainly for the fingering. Perhaps maple necks are a bit brighter than rosewood ones, I'm not sure.

Sloppy Joe. (Sloppy Jo?)

To me, they both give that high end "snap". That's all the difference I really hear to be honest from either of these woods and many others.

I hear no difference between alder and ash.

Swamp ash. As light as possible. LOVE that pop and midrange sweetness

Smithfield Ham sandwich...chips...and a fist full of oreos.

I like alder....but, depending on the guitar, when you've got an ash body that's "right'....it's mighty hard to argue with. :)

I had no lunch but had a late breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns and maple bacon. You Brits don't even know what bacon is but even Americans don't know maple bacon, I don't think. It is supremely good. Mine was quilted by the way - I think those pigs sound better than the flamed ones. Maybe not.

I don't know alder from Aldwyn but I saw the movie "Grizzly Man" today - great, great movie, music by Richard Thompson and there were alder trees throughout. I recommend this movie even if you prefer ash. I won't bother with the pun about horse's ash.

Lunch: english muffins w/ cheddar cheese. banana.

I'm not a Strat player, so I can't really answer. My Strat Substitute has an ash back and it sounds better than anything else in the universe, so I'd have to go with ash.
Although...the guitar I had on order and then canceled to get the Strat Substitute was going to be alder. That was going to have sounded great too.

I've never heard of "Grizzly Man". On my way to do Research.

edit: yes, I have. Need to see it.

-John Sorry to hear you suffered the tourist bacon. You lot fry or grill it to death - I like it well done, but not so well done that it looks like one of those doggie chews. I have to say that the honey roast ham company do the most fantastic .....honey roat ham of course. I don't know if they are a franchise - guess so, but the one we got some from was in Bethesda nr DC or in DC:confused: . Bit of mustard on it ....awww ...beautiful ...dribble.

Yesterday I had a Filet O' Fish, large fries and a large Coke (my arteries thanked me).

For a Strat I choose alder. IMO, ash is too bright sounding. I like the mids that alder gives.

Late brunch of Special K then toasted Scottish pankake...mmmmmm!

Well done back bacon the best...the streaky stuff you can keep - just tastes of fat.

Alder or Ash....No idea....Lots of 70's Strats wers made from Ash - weighed a bloody ton...at least the one I had did.

Tomorrow's lunch will be nice tho...Mum and Dad taking us for lunch...My B'day u see.

My lovely roast beef sarnie with kosher dill and bread and butter pickles slices. MMM-mmm.

I used to own a Strat that was ash body/rosewood fingerboard. I gave the best of both worlds, being sweet midrange, like Big Mike said, but smoother and more mellow than a maple neck.

I tried a maple/ash combination, but it sounded way too "glassy" and thin. The ash/rosewood IMHO is the best route to go for a Strat. My next choice would be alder/maple, then alder/rosewood.

The alder, to me, provides more of a mellow tone than the bright ash. Remember, though, rosewood mellows things out when compared with maple.
Dang, now I'm gassin' for a Strat again!

I got a lot from that RSG... and all -thanks. I'm going for an alder body / maple neck myself. Which is the same woods as the one that I intend to sell too. I tried a Mark Knopfler strat - not sure what the body is on that, but it sounded terrible. Rosewood neck ...As dead as a dodo. Looked nice ..sounded bad. Same with a closet daph blue one I tried. I'm not a great fan of maple necks, but we'll see how I get on. This one is a nitro finish and may not be so 'sticky' feeling on bends. I don't like bright guitars or bright tones on my amps either.

Yet I like a Fender twin for clean which doesn't sound too bright to me yet they are renowned for being like that. The blackface ones - or the two I have arent and one of them has got JBL's in and I have the bright switch on. Must be in the fingers;)

Could be! I use a really thick Dunlop Jazz pick # 205, which is a modified teardrop shape, not like a Tortex or Delrin pick. It's small, which adds to my control, has good attack, and good "release." It definitely mellows out my bright-sounding Fender Blues Deluxe RI. I am going to test my rig with my Genz-Benz Shenandoah for "recordability" and see if my amp switcher can include both amps for sound quality.

I find that even a 1.14 mm Dunlop is far too flimsy to be useful to me. The 205 is a shade over 2.0 mm thick, and usually available by special order through most dealers. I'll try to find a link to the Dunlop page for you. If you want, shoot me an email and I'll try to ship a half-dozen or so 205's to you, so you can try them out. Could be in the fingers, but could also be the pick! :dude:

I'm back. Like a vampire, I was just waiting to be asked.

I feel vastly qualified - even overqualified - to give information on food.

Bob, your information, always readable and interesting, is just as welcome - I was just, as they say, having a piss at Darren. Did I say that right?

Jas, you must be having some nibbly bits of your own we haven't heard about!

Thanks, BTW, for the compliment! Darren's most likely getting to nod off to sleepytime over in the UK. You can say anything you want while the evening wears on. As for me, I'm heading to the basement music room for some playing time. I'll be back around midnight. BWWAAAHAAAHAA! (poof!) :D

Thanks for the information Bob! I use Jazz III's which are nylon and 1.38mm thick. I'm always open to suggestions though - leave no stone unturned as far as tone is concerned (that explains why we all have far too many guitars). If that's ok for a sample - why not... thanks! I like the shape of the pick far right btw.

I used to cover the BAM nightshift in my old job and it was up to me to report to all UK Bammers - if anything went up and was deleted by morning, it was my job to report on events. Now nobody covers it, so you can say what you like.:)

I fear you have not said that right John - having a pi$$ at me would be interpereted in the literal sense of the phrase over here.... as the way it reads.

Since we're talking picks all of a sudden, take a look at Vinni's new design:

I have my personal edition and so far I'm very impressed with it.
Could solve all your problems, and bring world peace too, if that's the sort of thing you're interested in.

I had a ham sandwich and a Coke, IIRC, at my in-laws last Friday.

Having only spent significant amounts of time with rosewood/alder Strats, I'll have to go with that answer. I must say that I've been GASsing for a maple/ash Strat for years though, if for nothing else but a slightly different flavor of Strat (even if it ends up looking like a SAS or Tele in the meantime...).

Today I had Mickey D's!

Well, being a Fender player all my life (up until 3 months ago) I swore by Alder for my Strats. When I bought my US Tele I got an ash US Standard in White Blonde. It was my favorite Tele that I had ever played. But you asked about Strats.... I ordered a Master Built Custom Shop Strat in Cobalt Blue Transparent and had it made out of Alder. They fought me about using alder for a transparent color but then after it was done they kept it 2 extra weeks just to jam on it and stare at its beauty!! They were killing me since it took 1.5 YEARS to get!! At the end of my Strat playing days I bought a limited edition Mahogony body Strat Deluxe and it was SWEET. So if I were to choose wood for a Strat my choices would be Alder then Mahogony. Ash for Tele. (I bought my Master Built Strat for $2200 NEW and sold it for $600  )Here's a pic of my Transparent Cobalt Blue Alder Strat:

For a minute I thought you typed $600 EQB for a masterbuilt. Tell me that ain't so! Love the blue strat - looks ash like though don't you think? I got mine anyway, maybe I'll do a thread on it. It's great now - custom shop quality on a productionline model I'd agree with for the actual guitar, but not for the set up. I took off the lacquer on the sides of the frets (maple neck - I HATE that) and had to do some fretwork and polishing - maybe just my personal taste, but it was hardly optimum. A tailored 54 neck, 63 middle and hotter bridge. No tone control on middle, hum cancelling on neck and middle and bridge and middle. Nitro body and neck. (alder body and maple neck). It's great for Police stuff, been playing it all day.

No the blue strat is definatly Alder. It weighs a lot more than my ash Tele. The custom shop just hand selected the best grained piece they could. Its really cool. (I hate that I sold it for, yes you were right....$600!!!) The list was over $10k too and I got a Pro price for it at $2200. All I have to say is that girls make you do STUPID things and I will warn you all to stay away from them, they are EVIL!....LOL Just Kidding of course, there are some great ones out there. Heres another shot of my old blue one that I'm thinking about having duplicated.
