One bummer about BAM going down was that I didn't get to share this. A couple Fridays ago (2/6), I had an audition with a new band. This one was different from any other audition I'd ever had. First, the band was doing primarily original material: I was given a CD with acoustic demos of the songs and I needed to work out a lead guitar part for three songs. The other novelty was that it was a self-described alt-country band. Maybe I'm in denial but I'd describe it more like "Neil Young meets the Byrds". :)
In any case, I did well enough to get invited back and have been spending a lot of time listening to the demo songs to try to work out my parts.
What's super challenging for me is the uber-tasteful nature of the guitar parts my bandmates prefer. Let's just say that I'm playing a lot of whole notes. :D If I wanted to play shredder in a band situation, this definitely isn't it. Anyway, I'm having a blast working out parts for the songs (nobody's gonna get on me for deviating from the original version) and we rehearse 10 minutes from my house (my last band rehearsed way out in BuFu nowhere--the last 3.5 miles were on dirt roads).
I also took the opportunity to buy some new gear: a Boss Compressor and a Marshall 4x12. I got the compreassor to help with all the clean parts I'm playing and the cab is now in my basement to backfill the 2x12 I'll be leaving at the rehearsal space.

I love Neil Young! A lot of people don't get his style, but I think he is a genius!

BTW...which guitar are you using the most for this new gig?? I wonder which one of your babies gets the best clean tone overall...:)I took my often-neglected '01 CE22 to the audition. I figured its D2 pickups aren't as hot as the HFS/VBs in my 24s. The Driskill's tone is a bit too LP-like for what I'm trying to do, even in the in-between positions. The CuRo might be an interesting guitar for this gig...whenever it comes in.
I'm still figuring it out...

Congrats!!!
Sounds like a style I would like ! I go more for the musical leads myself now, sure I like to shred on my own time, but for the band I try to be musical first and formost.
Congrats!!!

Congrats man - that is outstanding!!
Congratulations Alec! I hear what you're saying about working out parts. It's been my experience that if you take the time to show bandmates that you care enough about their songs to learn the original parts, pretty soon they're giving you license to "put your take" on it. Plus, like you said, you can get a great feel for where they're coming from musically. Hopefully all of which tends to lead to collaborating on the next batch of new songs.
New band + new sonic needs = new gear
Always a good equation!!
