After years of bemoaning the digital side of recording I've finally given in to new technology for music.
I've used Digital high end recorders and desks for over 15 years in my job as a dubbing mixer but have always had analogue desks with Fostex recorder's for my music.
I've finally taken the plunge and got myself a Digidesign 002 console with Pro Tools LE and will record via my new laptop.
The main reasons for jumping is not to do with sound quality but to have a more convenient andportable package for location recording.
I can now also track lay for feature films and at least work on Eastenders and Holby City as they use pro tools too.
By the way I am setting my rates at 24 bit (20 bits excl user bits etc) at 48khz and will transfer all my Fostex stuff to the pro tools via wav export.
Paid $1800 for the Digi 002 so I think I got a good deal.
Weeks of manual reading now but at least I have a good music recording friend who can teach me the ways of pro tools.

Gary
I lost you after 'I think I must be getting Old and insecure'. Far too technical for me.
By the way, watched last Thursday's Bill Episode, it was quite good

I assume that's a joke, or are you actually talking about viewing figures?

It got the usual 8-9 million, sorry it was a bit of a sick joke about the end of the bank manager.
By the way you should see Kerry after the affects of the bomb going off. She was standing next to the panda car that was totally demolished and she turns up in the next ep with three scratches on her face. Shows what total bollocks I have to work on nowadays.
It pays the rent tho!!!!:D

You've spoiled my viewing for Wed/Thu now. We, the viewers, are supposed to believe that she may have been killed!!
I had heard a rumour that Kerry and Cameron were going out of the Bill, onto 'better' things. If true, Cameron will probably be ok. Not sure about Kerry's acting abilities though. Her facial expressions are a bit over the top.

Sorry John I was joking her blood and brains are splattered all over the place.
Yes they both could be leaving but I am not alowed to say but don't be surprised if the pop up in Casualty or Holby City.
Beth Cordingly was in Family Affairs before the Bill and that is about her acting level.
I can never understand what the Aussie guy is saying and that's from the dubbing mixer.

Hi Gary,
So you've finally been assimilated by the Borg (sorry, Digidesign:D ). I guess you won't be at any more Luddites Anonymous meetings, then.
Where did you buy your 002, if you don't mind me asking?

I got it through a reader's ad in Sound on Sound but it is brand new.
There's one on e-bay at the moment and it's in Manchester so go for it Ian.

Finally got up and running today after adding 512mb of Ram and buying a USB/Firewire caddy for one of my Fostex Western Digital 20gb drives.
Do any of you record to the drive via USB as this seems faster at 480mb and it would also allow different ports for the 002 and the drives.
I have a question for the learned Pro Tools users.
I am running LE6.1 and have loaded all the free plug ins inc Amplitude and all the Bomb factory ones but I cant see them all in the list of available plug ins even though I can see them opening up when Pro Tools first boots up.
Am I looking in the right place or is there another process I have to do to access all the add on's.
I've entered all the registration codes on boot up.

It seems to have found all the plug-ins OK now and recording to the USB 2 driveworks fine too.
I am going to import my album from the Fostex for mixing and will let you know how I get on.

I now have all my album on the Pro Tools and it is a great value system and does a lot of what my pro gear at work does.
Had a couple of errors on the hardware side so I am no running the Hard disks on the Firewire bus and they are much more stable.
I am really happy that the definition that I was after is all there and I can hear things without resorting to too much EQ.
Just running at 16bit 44.1 as that is what the album was recorded in but the second album will be done in higher resolution as it is more acoustic and jazzy.
