I have an old cheap pair of headsets and they distort. It's very frustrating. Not looking to spend lots of money but certainly more than a 20 or 30 dollar set. I use them mostly for playing guitar late at night and using the headset jack on my amp.

I really like the Sony MDR7506 set. Bought a pair about six months ago and love them. These are around $100. I also tried a Sennheiser set at the same price point. Sennheisers were VERY comfortable but didn't have the low end response. Sennheisers are probably the better choice for recording but I use mine mostly for silent practice as well as casual music listening so I like the extra bass response.

AKG K141 or K240. I've had two pair since 1985 (141's). I was in alot of NY studios some years back, and most every one had Yamaha NS10Ms as reference monitors, and the AKGs throughout. I got hooked on them then, and have used them ever since.

I like some of the Sony stuff too, but a big +1 for the AKG's.

I have the Sennheiser HD280's and they are great for tracking, mixing, and casual listening.

Open:
Grado SR125 or SR225: high-end audiophile sound quality for about $150-$200. Reference quality.

I agree with MP's choice - Sennheiser HD280. Decent sound, excellent isolation, but not very accurate.

Sony MDR-V600 - $75-100 at your local retailer.
On the other hand, I've mixed albums on flights all over the continental US and abroad with my Ultimate Ears ue-10 pros and laptop. It's a case of wrong place, right time.
The Sony cans are quality and have a good frequency response, great frequency range, and are moderately inexpensive. Best of luck finding a good set of 'phones.

I have Sony MDR700s. The low end response is superb. They sound so good... too good.... that it's bad. I always had this problem of NEVER ever being able to get that good of a sound live.

My vote is for the Sony's. I've got some of the older VR600,700 and 900. Real nice!
