View Full Version : Time to embarass myself
I've spliced some clips of me playing my McRosie direct through a Digitech Genesis 3 desktop processor. All the drum loops were created in FruityStudio (a great, easy-to-use tool). No bass playing on these mixes (I'm an aweful bass player) and the guitar is mixed high, as it's more or less of a test of what the desktop unit can do.
I figured I would post this so that when I make some generalized, opinionated statement here, anyone can come back to this and go "oh, well I don't have to listen to THAT guy!" :)

I couldn't get the link, ss.
Maybe you should reconsider your dig at the gestapo. :D

Adam,
The link's working man. My hat's off to you, if you're embarassed by your clips, then I'm not gonna be posting any clips of me anytime soon!! Your sense of timing is great and I didn't get the feeling that you just pasted a bunch of noodling together to make a solo. Good stuff! Do you have a band?

'nuff said.
Um, not sure what to say, guys. Your praise honors me - thanks.
Any sense of timing I have, I owe to an extremely talented drummer I played with for several years. I've been working hard lately trying to improve my dexterity to get where I want to be, but so much just seems out of reach.
:) ---- and kev, I'm really a rhythm player at heart, so if I want to venture outside the Mixolydian realm, I've got to compose it first or it's fall-on-my-face time!

Adam, nothing to be embarrassed about at all. Very nice playing, some great rhythm grooves there. Good job on the drum loops, too.
Maybe someday I'll be able to play like that!!!
Allan.

Zero shame in that approach my friend!
I know exactly what you mean about the drummer being who you owe for your sense of timing. The drummer I grew up with was/is a huge influence on who I am musically today. He is the perfect combination, a musical soul mate. He's one of those musicians who, when you are working with other drummers, you wish he was there instead.

That's exactly the same with my drummer. He taught me how to groove, and he also doubled as my best friend. Next weekend I'll be heading back to Ohio for a few days, and I'll have the opportunity to jam with him again - I'm pretty psyched.

I'm always working on new material, and I think it would be really cool to collaborate with a fellow BAMmer. If you're still interested when I finish another arrangement (in song form) I'll be dropping you a line.

Sounds great to me.
Great rhythm work too.
I know a few good lead players that are let down by bad rhythm.
You got the chops down my man.:dude: :dude: :dude:

sounds great!!
dang guys - thanks for that! Frankie, I've listened to your version of frankenstien about two dozen times, so coming from you that's a serious compliment. :dude:
Ripcom man - thanks for the compliments, but I've gotta disagree! In no way are my chops anywhere close to being "down." :) What I need to do is get over my sense of pride and start taking lessons or something.

There's nothing wrong with trying to improve yourself.
Doesn't matter how good you are there is always something new to learn.
But from what I've heard from your clips you are well on your way.
Plus you got your own ideas. So what if you have to work it out beforehand.
If you have to take lessons take some in how to teach others to play rhythm like you do.:dude:

Alright, this deserves a multi-part answer.
You're right - one should never put themselves down. My perspective is this: I base my opinion of my playing on my proximity to my goals, compounded by how long it's taken me to get where I am now. So far, not great, but seeing improvement is and has always been my motivator.
I've been playing for eight or nine years now - started at 14 and am now about to turn 23, and I've still got a long way to go before I'll be able to intiutively play what I hear in my head. :D Working on it, though.
I do appreciate the positive feedback, and I take it to heart, too.
As far as my rhythm playing - the best lesson I could ever give a rhythm guitarist is to introduce them to a great drummer. You know - the kind that won't let you stop playing and start over again when you goof up during band practice. :) (I suppose the drummer keeping solid time and having a great groove helps a little too.)
