A real treat, Gretchen and the kids picked me up at work and took me to lunch today. Pizza Hut buffet. I'm full.

Topic of the day - Interleague Play:Boon or Bust?
Is it a benefit to MLB and its fans to have teams from opposing leagues play eachother in regular season games? Or is a money-making scheme that cheapens the World Series, and is a detriment to the game in the form of less games against your division rivals?

P.S. A salute to those who stormed the beaches of Normandy in 1944.

Dan,

I have mixed feelimgs about it. I do think it's a bit of a money deal....I also think that it somewhat takes away from the magic of the World Series....but I do think it answers the age old question of "what if" and allows teams in local markets (Chicago, LA, NY) the opportuniy to play each other even if they don't reach the series.

Like I said...it's a mixed bag for me.

Lunch: My wife's home-made tuna salad (scrumptious stuff...), Lay's Sea Salt chips, Yoplait Harvest Peach yogurt, and a piece of my wife's home-made banana bundt cake.:D

Ham in a baguette + a bottle of lucozade. Can't really contribute to the discussion, because I'm not sure if you are talking about rounders, netball or the sissy game you lot play with body armour. ;) I'm sure that I will agree or disagree with whatever the concensus is.

Sesame chicken at a local Chinese place I'd never been to before. I give it a rating of very good+OHSC!!! ;)

I cannot add to the baseball discussion, but can I mention my own personal D-Day story (it has a baseball cap involved)?

In early June 2001, we (my family) were waiting to board a direct flight to Raliegh. It was the first flight of the day for this airline (now gone, post 9/11), so it was a small group of us. Well, during the course of waiting, I noticed that there was an elderly couple sitting next to us and that the gentleman was wearing a D-Day baseball cap. I was getting ready to get up, introduce myself, and ask him about the cap, figuring he was most likely a veteran of WWII, when another guy beat me to it. Turns out he was in the first wave on Omaha beach. I was floored and honored to be sitting that close to that couple. We thanked them both for their service to our country, it was the least we could do.

Anytime I have an idea that someone could be a veteran, I make an effort to thank them, but this was meeting a veteran of veterans, if you know what I mean.

John, Dan used an acronym that clued me in, MLB (Major League Baseball). So this is about USAs version of rounders That's about where my knowledge of the sport ends. I'm not a hater, just uninformed, please no flames.

:D:D

Great story about the veteren. I can't imagine the sort of knots those guys had in their stomachs, riding across the Channel in their transports.

Tim, I suppose it is here to stay. It has its benifits, like local rivals who would otherwise never get to play. Or a situation like the Cardinals get this week, where you get the Red Sox and the Yankees coming in for a couple of sold-out series.

But in most other situations, the novelty has worn a bit thin for me.

Today I had Whataburger chicken strips.

My default lunch, turkey and swiss on rye with mustard.

I hate interleague baseball. That said, I recognize it's been a tremendous boon to baseball and will probably continue to be. But did I say I hate it?

To me it DILUTES traditional rivalries because it takes games away from other in-league rivals. The best rivalries to me are the ones that've always been there - Yanks vs. Red Sox, Yanks vs. Orioles, Phils vs. Mets, Cards vs. Cubs, Giants vs. Dodgers.

It is too often the case that something that's good for baseball, economically, is not good for the fan. Soon we will be seeing corporate logos on uniforms - that will be good for the teams' bank accounts but, somehow, I don't think the fans will benefit. Count on it happening because last week Bud Selig said he was against it.

Did you all know that years ago they took a vote on realignment of the leagues into 3 divisions - there were 28 votes and the tally was 27 to 1, obviously for realignment. The dissenting vote: one George W. Bush, owner of the Texas Rangers (who are in town tomorrow night in a stupid interleague game).

Agreed, the best rivalries are cultivated by repeatedly playing teams when the stakes are high. Strong teams battling for the pennant year after year forms rivalries. Rivalries, and the ensuing drama and competition are the way to build the fanbase and sell tickets, not novelties and gimmicks.

Oh, and I want to say, regarding D-Day, that "Saving Private Ryan" is the best war movie I've ever seen.

But I'd rather gripe about interleague play.

Well, I have been to two MLB games, one Braves, one Texas Rangers. I've attended numerous minor league games, especially when Jordan was with the Birmingham Barons (hold your fire gentlemen). Heck I've played a game or two, maybe pitched in one even ( ). It just never cranked my tractor I guess. I'd rather be chugging out power chords, so, that's what I do...:D

Well now for something different...My school cook takes my order for lunch as I have to nip out..... salad roll, few chips - fries to you guys...lemon cake and fresh orange.

I get back later than I thought and one of the other kitchen staff has given it out....so I have to 'NIP OUT' once again....salad roll, 2 bars chocolate to kill STRESS and a packet of crisps. hahaha!!!

As for MLB...its in some ways like our cricket...long drawn out spells of in action interspersed with sometimes explosive action you just wouldn't want to miss.
Now your football is more my game - used to be glued to Washington Redskins each week on our TV. Remember Joe Theiseman...can still can his leg snap!!! Ouchhh!

lunch - a crazy sandwhich made out of seemingly everything left in the fridge (did I mention I'm desperate to get a job?)

I like interleague play. It gives me a chance to see a couple of teams that I would probably not get to see otherwise. I'm not enough of a baseball purist to care I guess.

You're all a bunch of guitar nerds so you wouldn't notice but there's a mistruth in my initial post. I think the in-division rivals (Yanks, Sox, Orioles) play each other as much as ever with the new schedule introduced last year.

So let me shift my argument a bit - this is what I wanted to say all along: that interleague baseball dilutes the traditional in-league but inter-divisional rivalries like Phils vs. Dodgers, Yanks vs. Twins. Better?

Turkey sandwich on Cuban bread. Pressed. Dang it was yummy.

I am a baseball fan, and I really couldn't care less about interleague play. As long as these multi-millionaires play their little game and keep it interesting, I'm happy.

-John I'm a huge baseball fan and I love to argue (John can atest to that), but I refuse to argue with John for the sake that he's looking for it. He doesn't deserve the satisfaction. ;)

Oh, and I had a chicken club and a Diet Sprite. I, for one, love the idea of interleague play and I absolutely agree with the way MLB does it. I look forward to interleague games each year and the rivals that have been created since it's inception. IMO, it's the only thing that Bud Selig has done right since he took over in the 90's.

I'm watching! I hate watching Wakefield pitch - he's so frustrating for everyone involved.

To answer your question, I dare insult your arguing skills because I have appointed myself the BaM Insultant. My fees are most reasonable and I am available on retainer.

I guess I liked it (I know you didn't ask me - tough!) since a success definitely scores a run (as opposed to "maybe scores a run") and it was the pitcher batting and he's a good bunter. I'm still nagged by the thought that you're scoring one run but severly reducing your shot at scoring more than one.

Isn't Varitek the coolest player on the planet, though? What a tough hombre! Ok, ok, Pujols isn't too shabby either.

Perfect. And it was cool how the camera zoomed out at the proper time so you could see the play develop.

Not in the mood for a fight? Why did you log onto BaM then?

That's interesting - I never thought about local camera crews making a difference.

I do know that you guys are one of the few FOX affiliates that broadcast in HDTV and for that, I thank you and the fine denizens of the midwest. And the Cards are never boring (when's Rolen coming back?).

Not sure when Rolen is coming back. IIRC, he was expected to be out 6-8 weeks. So, maybe another month or so.
