Turkey and American cheese on rye with Dijon mustard. This is my default lunch.
Let's talk about defaults.
Do you have them? Do you say, um, like, y'know and stuff like that? There's a guy on Air America Radio who says "y'know" after, y'know, like every two words until I want to reach up to the satellite and, y'know, strangle him.
Do you have them on the guitar? Do you have your default licks, something you do when all else fails? I do - in fact, those are the only licks I have; I try to make it up as it goes along but when the mind and/or fingers fail, it's time for those awful default licks. I measure success partly by the ratio between made up stuff and default licks in an evening.
Do you default to playing a certain song? I do. When I'm brain dead, I'm likely to play one of four or five numbers until I come to.
I know players who default to a certain rhythm - a certain strum. I sure hope I don't but this may be an instance where you can't smell your own.
Finally, do you default to pronouncing "default" with the accent on the first syllable or on the second - which would be the default in these here parts, y'know.
Incidentally, I had no plans to write any of this but nobody posted a lunch report for today. An act of pure, un-selfish sacrifice if you ask me.

No lunch for me today. Forgot to bring something, and no cash on me, and didn't feel like borrowing a car to go home.
My life is a life of defaults. I have too many to list. I'm sure that I am an amazingly annoying creature to be around. Although, inexplicably, my wife and kids seem to like me and genuinely enjoy my comapny. They must be wierd.
Yikes, sorry jas, I'll sign up for another day. I'm too slow on the trigger.
Today was a last minute call to jump out of the office. 1/4 chicken dark meat plate from a local BBQ chain called Full Moon Bar-B-Que. Good stuff.
1/4 dark meat chicken - still on bones
baked beans
homestyle fries
pickles
buttered and toasted hamburger bun
ice water
I'm not sure about my defaults in my speech, although it must be the deathly long pauses between thoughts and the abuse of "um".
As for guitar playing defaults, that's about all of what my playing consists of these days. Terrible stuff really. About the only default that seems to grab people's attention in a good way is when I'm playing my 12-string acoustic. "All Thing's Must Pass" tends to be the crowd pleaser on that one. It's just a great song with a lovely haunting chord progression. "Melissa" is another one that uses a similar chord structure.

Just had sardines on toast for my tea here, having got back from London.
I hope I have no speech mannerisms, or Footballers speak as we call it. Hope you like our Mrs Beckham on his tour of your little Country. He's definitely a 'You Know' person. If your'e sad like me, count the number of times he will say 'You Know' in an interview. After England beat, sorry hammered Germany, a couple of years ago, I counted at least 27 times, before I gave up.
From a playing point of view, of course I have default licks, if I can remember them. I never play the 'proper' solos from any songs I play, I just ad-lib, so I need a box of default licks that I string together with pure adrelanin.
Pronounciation of Default - hmmm. John, me old mate, you nearly have it if you accent the first syllable. The second syllable is for those who say Toe-mate-toe. :)
And another with that similar chord progression is "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by the incredible, late Sandy Denny.
Did I steal your thread, Kev? Sorry! I looked to see if anyone had claimed it but I guess I didn't look in the right place (story of my life).

Free lunch again for me ..always tastes better that way. Sarnies and 'party food' / buffet lucheon.
I say it the proper way, but can tolerate people who dEfault to the wrong way. Today I found a Bill Gates dEfault cost me about an hour ..a global command on a PC prog that stays selected even when you close the package ..it defaults to whaver it was last selected to last ...and that's if you know where to find it.
Default songs and default chords - I'm terrible for it - specially if I just pick up the guitar and don't plan to play anything in particular.
We kept getting called Y'all in America ..and there was only two of us

I've defaulted on a few things in my life but thats ancient history. :o

Sliced turkey breast on Heath Nut bread, mustard, dill pickle slices, cherry tomatoes. Fat-free chips and salsa, diet Coke.
Radio station default = NPR
TV default = Speed TV, except when anything NASCAR-ish is on
Speech defaults = "y'all", because I'm Texan; "****" or "g*d-f****ing damn it" when I hit my thumb with with a hammer; "excuse me?" far too often because of hearing loss from playing way too much loud music.
Selected guitar default = usually the Srat since it has the tremolo, and it frets a bit better that the LP at this point
Selected vehicle default = the ZX-12R, since it is shitloads more fun
Beer default = Coors, but I'll drink damn near any of 'em if they're cold and, better, free.

Lunch at home today - salami & cheddar sandwich.
Default I say with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable, and with a schwa sound for "de".
I don't have any default phrases in speech, and I'm incredibly sensitive to them in others. I would do well to be more patient with others.
I have been know to stammer - that is, to get going on a, to get going on a sentence, and go back, go back and repeat parts of it. I worked to eliminate this.
I have a few default licks that are the thing's I'll play when trying out a guitar, but nothing I fall back on while soloing. I only wish I had habitual solo licks. - I don't have the discipline for that. Every time I solo it's a surprise to me what's going to happen.
As for rhythm playing, I have been known to slip toward funky 9th chords no matter what the tune, but that's always a conscious decision.
The first chord I play is Bm7, played thusly: 7 9 7 7 7 7. I'm very consistent about that. When noodling, I play m7ths a lot more than normal minor chords.
In life I don't have defaults. In fact, if someone could be obsessive-compulsive about never repeating the way an action is performed, that would be me. Shaving, teeth-brushing: these must begin in different places every time.

Steak and salad - and a glass of red wine to compensate.
Lately my playing is uninspired and chock full of default licks and chord progressions. On electric, when I'm having a brainfart I fall back on the lick that starts off John Fogerty's "The Old Man Down The Road", or else Greenie's "Oh Well". Chord progressions mutate to Pink Floyd's "Breathe" or else ZZ Top's "Cheap Sunglasses".
Acoustic is more fun, though I do default in standard tuning to "Over The Hills and Far Away". Usually, though, I re-tune to DADGAD or open C or G and just hack around. I like that because I have far less pre-set patterns, so there are better odds that something inspiring, or at least weird, will come out of it.
The dobro is always in open G, so my default is invariably "Walking Blues" or something equally hackneyed.
When in doubt, the Dorian scale always works.
Also, my default mode on BaM is letting the typos flow unashamedly ;)

French Dip and Fries (Only okay, not great) at a local hole in the wall diner.
I default CONSTANTLY! Several speech patterns, keyboard typos are repeated frequently (as I'm sure y'all know) as well.
Music, mostly I end up defaulting to SRV licks, and the standard battery of blues progressions. Can't help it. They're ingrained in my phsychie.

Top Ramen and corn dogs.
My defaults are:
1. Playing every song on the red channel of my DR, which is just as nasty and distorted as I can stand it.
2. Guinness
3. Sitting in my studio staring at the square headed girlfriend playing freecell for hours at a time
4. Food TV or anything racing related.
5. Hanging out here.
6. Alter Bridge or Chevelle in the CD player in my car.

D. Guitar - Turns out Emma has become the first one I reach for now
First beverage I order when going out - White Russian or Iron Butterfly
Guitar Riff would be either the first song Buckethead played last time I saw him or It Don't Come Easy by Ringo Starr
Lunch:
Homemade Salad with lettuce from my neighboor and peanuts, a Guiness, a Hefeweizen and for desert a glass of Yellow Tail Shiraz

3 chords....A D E!! LOL If I am writing something and can't figure out the "sound" I'm looking for I end up jamming with A D and E until a lick pops into my head and then I move on to continuing my song.
I hate it some times. But those are my favorite, my security blanket. I think it might have something to do with those 3 chords being the very first ones I learned when I was 13!!!!

-JohnNo harm, no foul John. I was laughing at myself when I saw you had started the thread. Good topic too, I must say. Sadly, I don't believe I'm familiar with the Sandy Denny tune. I'll have to look it up.

Yesterday's lunch was my favorite local specialty, green curry chicken and sticky rice from the Thai place up the street. Good day, lots of good greens. (broccoli, snow peas, bok choy, string beans...)
Defaults... while I'm nowhere near as religious as, say, Wayne Krantz about this, I try to be aware of personal defaults and slay them in their beds. This approach works OK on the jazz bandstand (except when there's a singer involved!) but it drives my rock band CRAZY because I never play things the same way twice.
One day I taught a geometry class without saying a word... and it wasn't a test day. Again purely on impulse.
I do have an annoying tendency to play Leni Stern's "Phoenix" every time I try out a new guitar, though. Must do something about that.

Chinese Buffetin Atlantic Wharf.
Defaults, guilty as charged:
Every solo becomes a pentatonic unless I REALLY think about it.
First thing I play on any guitar is "Tie Your Mother Down" followed by "Jailbreak"
I have a default Irish accent despite being born and raised, and still living, in Wales.

Just a pretzel... Had too much for breakfast ;)
Oh-oh, defaults... Just noticed a few days ago them I "umm ... yah..." way too much when I am on air (I had recorded my disaster with the halved recipe and played it to my Mum for laughs....)
I guess my defaults on the guitar are my own ideas. I have a lick that I started just a few weeks ago that reminded me of one song of Jean-Michel Jarreīs Oxygene and I start with it whenever I grab my old electric (donīt ask what it is, it is just horrible and only filling the hole until my PRS arrives)
On the Chrords side I am mostly playing also one of my own ideas, always hoping to find that last part that I am looking for that would complete that song someday...
