View Full Version : OMG - Carmen Ghia

I have been playing a Dr. Z MAZ 18 2x10 for a while as my main amp. Sometimes I alternate this with a Z Prescription though an Avatar cabinet loaded with Eminence copies of Greenbacks. The Rx is a great amp, but last week I decided to see how it sounded through a wide 1x12 Boogie cabinet I have that has been languishing.

Without changing any settings, the Rx was @twice as loud. I kinda wondered how I was able to use the MAZ 18 and this 45 watt RX interchangably, with no great diff in volume. Well, maybe I need to look at the cab, and see if it is wired right, or maybe those Eminence are just not as efficient as the C-90 in the boogie cab.

Anyway, back to my story.

I decided that since the Rx was so loud, to try my Carmen Ghia through the Boogie cab. Using the Avatar, it was more of a novelty, since there was NO headroom. Great sound, but had to be cranked to work, which eliminated any usable clean.

With the Mesa cabinet this thing turned into a MONSTER!! Big fat sound, plenty of clarity - even with the fulldrive on "boost".

I plugged in my main CU24 and was able to switch from neck to bridge pickups without having to roll the tone off on the bridge. With the McCarty Soapbar another phonomenon took place. I could play lower on the neck and get a real chimy type sound, but when I moved up the neck, the high end sort of rolled off by it self and the notes fattened up. Really wierd, but in a good way.

I am going to investigate getting some different speakers in that Avatar cabinet. It is a great cabinet, and those speaker really do sound kinda like real greenbacks, but I think a beter speaker might be the key to getting the best out of that cab.

I just wanted to share how great I think that amp is - truly remarkable. It isn't just a blues amp - my band is an instrumental trio, and we play some pretty heay stuff, but also mix in some more funky stuff, too. It isn't Fender clean, but that works okay. I have tried another CU 24 and an old stratocaster with EMGs and this amp really rocks.

What a blast!!

-Phil_BThe MESA 90W Black Shadow is a powerful, efficient, clean, somewhat scooped but balanced speaker, different from what I think the Eminence is you're referring to. Not really a fair comparison (it would be like saying, "What's better, a LP or a Strat?").

Are the Eminences in your Avatar GB12s? I absolutely love that speaker but in an open back cab. If you've got those speakers in your Avatar and the back is closed, before you do anything else, remove the back (I'm assuming yours, like mine, is convertible).

Confession: I don't like the Carmen Ghia. Never have. But if I were to buy one, I would definitely run it through a speaker like the MESA 90 (or the CL80 on which the MESA is based). I would not choose GB12s for that amp.

The GB12 in my Tone King Continental sounds so fine.

I have a pair of CL80s in my open back Avatar 212H for use with my circa 1970 "marshally" Traynor YBA-1 head.

It is an open-backed cabinet, loaded with GB12s. I like the cabinet with the Prescription, and also the Ghia. But the Mesa cabinet is louder, and gave me a whole new perspective on the amp.

I'm just having so much fun with it.

I hear you! I think that MESA 1X12 cab with the 90W Black Shadow is awesome. Totally underrated, it can compete with any boutique gear.

I had a THD Univalve for a while before I sold it. It sounded better through my friend's MESA 1X12 than through anything else I tried of my own or others - by a mile!

There's a link on Dr. Z's website to this blues cat named Dean Parks demoing a Ghia. He doesn't say what cab/speakers he's going through, but the Ghia is sitting on top of a Marshall head, which is sitting on top of a Marshall 4x12 cab. Sounds pretty killer! (http://www.drzamps.com/)

I have a Mesa 4x12 that I want to try with the Ghia (and the Rx), but I just gotta get the gusto to move it around (it is HEAVY, and not just musically!).

It is loaded with Vintage 30s and I'll bet it would sound killer with either amp. I used to use it a lot with a TriAxis and 50/50 amp rig, and it really put out the sound. However, when I had a gig, I never brought it - I brought the 1x12! So much more practical.
