Spent this past weekend playing my fingers off, cuz an old and dear friend of mine (who also happens to be a Koch sales rep) lent me his sample Pedaltone. My initial reaction was "another tube preamp", so I figured I'd lose total interest by reading the manual. This only served to really get me going so I plugged it in. Holy Freakin' Tone Overdose! There are not enough superlatives in the English language! I've owned over four hundred amps in my career, and two weeks ago bought a mint Boogie Mark IV (already had the matching Satellite 60) which I honestly thought was going to satisfy me for a long time. Wrong.
Firstly, it's setup for both recording (fabulous direct Tone) and live use; in fact you can footswitch 12 different sounds, all in textures ranging from Fender clean to insane high-gain. Anyone interested in a 3-week-old Tonebone Classic; it just became redundant (mint with box and manual; $250 Canadian). I plugged my Gigadelay into the loop, and was gone for days. Even with all the gains dimed AND the internal 1.5 watt power amp activated, you can hear EVERY note in any chord, and the pick attack doesn't rip your ears off. Guitar controls work over their full range, and both channels have such a wide gain structure either can be used for anything from clean rhythm to fat lead. It is extremely rare I get this enthused about an amp, but I liked it so much I ordered one yesterday, which should be here in a matter of days. Life is so tough when your Mark IV is a backup amp...
Seriously, go to www.koch-amps.com (http://www.koch-amps.com/) and check this out, then track one down at a dealer and prepare to be flabbergasted. Extensive Tone report when I've had a chance to really flog it live. One of my buds just bought a new MESA Lonestar, and when he heard the Pedaltone he bought the sample unit; just couldn't let it get away. Crack is baby food compared to the addictive power of this unit. I'd tried the Twintone and Multitone live before, but this thing just has me smoked. Run, don't walk!-Eric
