I got tickets to "An evening with..." Dream Theater, in Minneapolis on March 13th. Really looking forward to it. Aren't we, Doug? ;)

I saw them in Montréal last summer, on the DT/Quennsryche/Dokken tour. This one will definitely beat that show!

Awesome. I'm just starting to get into Dream Theater now. I'd love to see them live.

Did you see the DVD (Metropolis 2000: Live Scenes From New-York)?
That was the cause of my epiphany. I had tried to get into them early (1992) but couldn't. Then I bought the DVD last year, and when I got my jaw off the floor, I started getting all their CDs. I'm officially a DT maniac now.

Live, they're unbelievable virtuosos, but they don't take themselves too seriously, and will do cover songs and stuff like that. It's refreshing to see a band like that.

I didn't realize they were on tour again. A quick transaction with the evil that is Ticketmaster and I have 11th row center tix for the March 11th show in Denver.

The DVD is on my must-buy list for my next trip to Best Buy. I figure that'll give me just about as broad of a range of their material as I need. Plus something to ogle at.

It is basically the full "Scenes From a Memory" album played live. So it;s not necessarily a very "broad" spectrum, but I promise you you'll like it.

On the other hand, there's a few bonus tracks (over an hour of bonus music!) with tracks from Awake, I&W and a Change Of Seasons.

They'll just be warming up for a rocking weekend in the Twin Cities!

Yes we are!! Dan has been kind enough to lend me some DT paraphanalia to get primed for the show. I didn't know much (or anything) about them beforehand, and I'll 2nd the DVD as a must have. I actually like the cd's more because of the DVD. .. And sure Minnesota gets a little cold, but the air'll never be as thin as Denver's. :p

Man, I want to see Petrucci play "As I Am" live, that solo is sick. Tix for Philly don't go on sale until this Saturday morning.

Check DreamTheater.org. Pre sale is probably today or tomorrow...
Go for the Platinum package - for a mere $250, you get a great seat and you meet the band!

Actually, although I don't think I'll ever pay $250 for a concert ticket, I think it's way cool that DT gives you an opportunity like that. If you have (or are willing to part with) the dough, you get to have an experience you'll never forget.

Just don't piss Mike off! ;)

WOW .... you lucky bastids :(

That'll be an awesome evening, it's guaranteed really innit !!

Love the last album, it's gotta be one of my favourites of theirs, track one is fantastic. It reminds me of early Sabbath 'til it kicks off and starts grooving. And as for 'Stream of Consciousness' it has got to be one of my all time fave tracks ever, I just love the way it builds just playing on that melody.
Gonna have to stick it on in the background from iTunes now as I catch up on the rest of the BAM news Dude!

i like dream theater a lot, but they really seem to ride that "Rush influence" thing. An Evening with DT??? I know its not Rush's idea at all, it was taken from the old polka/jazz bands I think, but....

They have a few songs, that I love, but I sware one should be called Xanadu part II. I think its the last song on falling into infinity.

any thoughts?

Love um either way, and believe me I rip off rush when ever I can :)

Got my tix. I bought the "Bronze" package, which is basically two tix in rows 16-30 somewhere. Not too bad.

Exactly what I did! You pay theoretically more, but you don't get the TicketSuckers service charges, so in the end, I think you come out ahead.
I still don't know where the heck I'll be sittting...

They rip off rush? Isn't that reason enough to love them?!?!?

They do, but they rip off many bands. However, they will be the first to openly admit it, so in that case it's called a tribute, not a rip off... ;)

I like how they use the style of the bands that influenced them. Plus, in the technical context that these hommages are paid, it stays really interesting.

So that being said, I have tix for DT, and consider me in line for the Rush tix.
What a year this is turning out to be, concert wise!
Dude! Dude! Dude!

Dan,
I saw dream theated last 2 summers ago, they were really good live. I have a few of their cds, I actually have a Pertrucci book too, talk about realizing you need some work on the fret board!!

i can definitely hear some And Justice... era metallica and Rust in Peace/Countdown... era megadeth in their latest release. some of the riffs sound amazingly similar. but you are right in that it is their tribute to those bands, because while they may quote a riff or two from classic bands they quickly put their own spin on it.
