Ok guys, I have a question. I have a Line 6 Vetta amp and I just got a MIDI/USB cord so that I may upload the new patches to the amp. Is there any way that I can record riffs/tracks/songs or whatever with this setup? If so, what all do I need? I'm new to the recording part of playing. All I have is this amp and my laptop. A friend of mine has SONAR 4 Producer, but I can't seem to get any sound out of it when I hook up my amp to my laptop with the MIDI/USB cord. What should I do? Can I record stuff with what I have or what do I need to buy? Hardware and Software? Thanks

You cant record over the Midi/Usb...but the spdif and the xlr outs do a great job. If hte soundcard on your pc has an spdif input just run directly to that.

The midi cable enables you to up/down load stuff to/from your amp, upgrade your software, use line 6 software to configure your amp etc.
To record you will need the XLRs or the spdif. The XLRs work as normal outputs either to a PA or a desk and the spdif section lets you do funky things like re-amping if your using a digital setup.
How much fun can you have with one amp?:)

Ok, so I have my amp sittin here and my laptop. What all (other than a program) do I need to start recording. Is XLR a type of cord that will go from my amp to my computer? What about spdif? I'm completely clueless about all of this.

OK Dan
XLR cables are plugged into the ports on the back of your amp, they are the big holes with 3 pins that look like microphone cables. You can get cables that go from that 3 pin jack to a 1/4 inch headphone jack, but since you are recording on a laptop, more than likely you do not have that type of port on your pc.
The spdif port looks like an RCA jack on the back of your amp. You also more than likely do not have one of these ports on your laptop either.
In order to record on your laptop you are going to end up having to get some type of add on box that has an interface that you can connect to your Vetta. There are a ton of different boxes to do this with nowadays. I know that little Tascam 122 USB has an xlr jack and plugs into your usb port and they can be had for pretty cheap on the used market. They also come with some recording software to get you started also.

I'm sure there's gotta be some good stuff on recording with their direct outs...
